Take a look over the wing of the plane bringing you in over a vast expanse of sea, and you’ll be enchanted by the first sight of the 5-star Amanpulo Resort on Pamalican; this island is part of the Quiniluban Group of Cuyo Islands, situated in the north of the Philippine province of Palawan. It’s a cozy place, only 5 kilometers long and 500 meters across at its widest point — you can clearly see the airstrip in the midst of the island. But that doesn’t stop Amanpulo from being spacious: its casitas are positioned in various spots on the beach, among the treetops, or on a hillside over the Sulu Sea. Such a layout gives you privacy; your own buggy (included with each accommodation) makes it easy for you to get around the rest of the island.
Loosely modeled after bahay kubo (Philippine native houses), the 40 casitas have distinct island décor: pebblewashed walls; coconut-shell tables; rustic Palawan rice and knife baskets — and beds with rattan headboards. Sliding glass doors lead to outdoor decks and his-and-her divans; baths of Cebu marble have twin vanities, elegant showers, and tubs under large windows. There’s plenty to do here: diving, tennis, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, and fishing, not to mention swimming in the infinity pool, having a spa treatment, or engaging in “shopping therapy” in the boutique. Asian and Continental cuisines — among them Vietnamese — await your sampling at the main restaurant…or take advantage of the Windsurf Hut and Picnic Grove and feast on pizza! Above all, Amanpulo wants to pamper you: spend a vacation here and you’ll want to come back again.
