Its name means “gunner” in French, and this Beachcomber hotel Le Canonnier may just “blow you away” with its sheer family-friendliness; in fact it’s been acclaimed as one of the best family resorts in Mauritius. Situated on a high point of a peninsula, with great views of the sparkling Indian Ocean, it also contains historical treasures: the ruins of a lighthouse and fortress blend seamlessly into the garden setting. Easy to get to from the village of Grand Baie, only 5 kilometers away, this great escape nevertheless gives you a wonderful sense of seclusion that the whole family will enjoy. Accommodations are generous, including two-bedroom apartments — including a baby care room, with facilities for parents with children under the age of three — and suites that have fabulous open-air décor.
What to do? There are tons of activities, from archery to windsurfing. Go out on pedal boats or kayaks, learn to scuba or snorkel, or play tennis on one of the three lighted courts. Explore the local marine life in glass-bottomed boats, or play a rousing game of volleyball or bocce ball. Pristine white beaches invite a bit of sunning; if you need souvenirs, try one of the boutiques. And when it’s time to key down, there’s nothing like a soothing spa treatment in the wellness center, built into the branches of a banyan tree! When the bunch is hungry, you’re in luck: the hotel has an exchange arrangement with Le Mauricia, so you have the choice of two resorts’ worth of cuisine all included. For sun, surf, and seafood — plus a whole lot more — you’ll want to pencil in a date for a trip to Le Canonnier…soon.
